Treating Muscle Spasticity
An intrathecal baclofen pump is an implanted pump that is used for administration of baclofen directly into the subarachnoid space around the spinal cord. Baclofen is a medication used to treat muscle spasticity. When baclofen pills have not helped muscle spasticity sufficiently or someone cannot tolerate the pills, evaluation can be performed to see if you might be a candidate for a baclofen pump. The pump is used primarily for difficult-to-treat leg spasticity in conditions such as multiple sclerosis, stroke, spastic paraparesis, spinal cord injury or cerebral palsy. If you are considered a possible candidate for a baclofen pump following your initial appointment, you will be scheduled for a baclofen pump trial for further evaluation. Baclofen pump medication refills and pump adjustments are performed in our office.
